LIBRARIES FOREVER

Posted in BERKELEY, CLAREMONT HILLS, EVENTS, NEIGHBORHOOD on November 21, 2011 by Julie Nachtwey, the Claremont Hills Real Estate Expert

Author Michael Lewis, Mayor Tom Bates and State Senator Loni Hancock were among the generous group of Berkeley residents who came out last weekend Nov 13 in support the Berkeley Neighborhood Libraries Campaign.

Fred & I were delighted to host the reception.  Linda Schacht Gage, chair of the capital campaign, updated people on the status of the four branch libraries and fundraising efforts.  Although voters passed Measure FF in 2008 to rebuild the branch libraries,  interior finishes and features were not included, such as desks, counters, chairs, bookshelves, computers, lighting etc.  So The Berkeley Public Library Foundation www.bplf.org  has stepped in…

YOU CAN HELP

The campaign intends to raise $3.5M by the end of next year to furnish and equip the four branch libraries.  According to Berkeley Public Library Foundation President, Elisabeth Watson, $1.8M has been raised so far.  The BPLF’s 10th Annual Authors Dinner is coming up FEB 11, 2011 info@bplf.org 510.981.6115.  This event single event has raised nearly $1M for Berkeley’s Public Libraries.

Two of the four library branches have been closed almost a year for extensive renovation.  Fortunately, the Claremont branch will reopen February 2012 and North Berkeley branch May 2012. As these two branches reopen, the West and South library branches will close. Those two sub-standard buildings are slated to be demolished and rebuilt up to current seismic and building code requirements. In fact, the new West Branch will be the first net zero energy library in the state.  BPLF and others in the community are committed to providing quality library services to all Berkeley residents in every neighborhood.

EVERYONE DESERVES TO LEARN TO READ

The West Branch is the home of an inspiring program called Berkeley Reads.  This is a literacy program in which volunteers help teach almost 200 adults a year to read and write. As funds are cut locally and state-wide, the libraries have become an even more essential hub for community services. Each branch will hold a celebration for neighbors and library lovers when it reopens.

Hidden Hillside

Waiting to be discovered by YOU. Help support our unique neighborhood native park!

View from Vicente Hillside Open Space

The Vicente Canyon Hillside Foundation (VCHF) mission is: “…to preserve a natural area within the cities of Berkeley and Oakland as permanent urban open space not for future development, to be open to the general public, to be actively managed as a fire safety demonstration zone, for the restoration of native plants and animals, for compatible recreation and for the enjoyment of natural beauty…”

The annual get-together of the Vicente Canyon Hillside Foundation was “a smash hit,” said Georgia Wright, VCHF president. “As long as the group stays financially solvent, this land will remain open and undeveloped.”

In 1976 like-minded residents of The Claremont Hills purchased the 2 1/2-acre parcel overlooking Vicente and Alvarado Roads. The property had been slated for construction of 25 houses. Instead, the “Hidden Hillside” has become a model for other native parks in the area. Open to the public, the open space features deer paths and trails, grassy slopes, native vegetation and fabulous vistas — including views of SF Bay. There are also several wood-bench seating areas provided by neighbors. Children and dogs on leash are welcome.

In order to continue the preservation and enjoyment of this Hidden Hillside, more tax-deductible memberships are required. Dues pay for the following expenses: maintenance of the hillside so that it does not become a fire hazard, upkeep on the community vegetable garden, clearing footpaths of poison oak, repair of the stairs on the Vicente easement access, liability insurance, and city assessments from Berkeley and Oakland. “In addition some legal expenses were paid last year,” explained Georgia. “As a result, our expenses now run a little bit more than our annual income.

Georgia outlined two ways to hold membership: (1) Full voting membership is $250/year for four years or $1000 one-time initiation fee.  After that, yearly dues are $100 per member household or $200 for owners of property contiguous to the land. (2) Annual members pay $100 per year if not contiguous, $200 if contiguous. The annual membership meeting occurs on the first or second Sunday of June (with a party, of course!)

Green Grass Roots

One of the best parts of living in The Claremont Hills is having easy access to nearby parks and open spaces.  The Claremont Canyon Conservancy brings a rewarding and educational outdoor experience to our neighborhood, in our own backyard.

The annual CCC meeting held recently at The Claremont Hotel featured John Swanson, Assistant Fire Chief of the East Bay Regional Park District.  He is an expert in large fire suppression.

”The Conservancy is a true grass roots organization,” says Marilyn Goldhaber. “After the 1991 Oakland Hills Firestorm, a small group of individuals studied what had happened and why over a ten-year period.

“They eventually convinced their neighbors to form a conservancy for the long-term good of the community.  Their goal was to keep the dialogue going.  They didn’t want important work in the canyon and surrounding wild lands left on the back burner, to be forgotten.

“Since 2001 more than 500 individuals and families have joined the Conservancy, many pledging support exceeding $1,000 over ten years.  Such community interest and support has made our program very successful.”

If you are interested in volunteering for Claremont Canyon Stewardship or joining this dedicated group, email info@ClaremontCanyon.org   You can visit the website to learn more about the diverse activities including: December 11 Bird Walk with Dave Quady and February 20 Wild Flowers of late Winter/Early Spring.

Keynote Speaker at the CCC annual meeting was John Swanson with 33 years of fire suppression experience with the US Forest Service jrswanson@ebparks.org
