Posted in BERKELEY on May 3, 2012 by Julie Nachtwey, the Claremont Hills Real Estate Expert

FIRST TIME ON MARKET
Lovely architectural jewel featuring one-bedroom, one bath and study with built-ins. Partial SF Bay Views. Lower level with separate entrance has potential.

THINK BIG
Unusually large upslope lot with 17,000 +/- sq feet.
The house is completely hidden from view on Keeler.
Driveway winds up the hill to ample parking pad and two-car garage with storage.

IN DOOR/OUT DOOR
Rare level lawn! Dining area opens to backyard brick patio
and what seems to be a secret garden. It’s like having your own park.

LOTS OF LIGHT
Windows frame views of the garden, trees and SF Bay. Even the bedroom has a glass door opening to the yard. The light from so many windows compliments the redwood interior and hardwood floors.

ARCHITECT-DESIGNED
This one-of-a-kind house was designed in 1948 by
Winfield Scott Wellington, professor of design at UC Berkeley, 1937-1965. Wellington did residential work throughout The Bay Area.

ART FOR THE PEOPLE

A unique store, located at 2950 College Avenue in the Elmwood, is turning heads. It’s called “Collector,” and offers affordable original art at prices ranging from $5 to $1000. Collector’s mission is to fill the niche between high-end fine art galleries and artist-run open studios. “It is a great concept and a wonderful venue for local artists to show their work” explained Kristen Jensen, a local artist who grew up in Berkeley and specializes in abstract, landscape and figurative paintings. Below (left) is a photo of three of her playful and colorful Pears.

My husband Fred and I attended an art opening at “Collector” last month with friends of the artists and residents of the Elmwood neighborhood. We were amazed that there is something fore every taste, pocketbook and purpose. The selection included: original paintings, drawings, illustrations, prints, ceramics, jewelry noteboods, textiles and various mixed media items.

Kristen happens to be our long-time neighbor, who lives accross the street with her family. She’s also a lawyer — how does she ever find time to paint? We’re lucky she does, because we love her work. We showcase several of her paintings, including Central Park and Sonoma in our home. To see more of her work, visit www.kristenjensenstudio.com Kristen is pictured below (left, center) with Fred and me.

“Collector” was opened in October 2011 by two friends, Skye Sullivan and Christina Begley. Their idea was to make original art more accessible to everyone. Visit “Collector” on Facebook www.facebook.com/collectorartshop make a personal visit to:

Remember Dec 7

You’re invited to commemorate Pearl Harbor Day on Wed Dec 7 with some of the Oakland Blues Musicians who came to the Bay Area during WW II.  They migrated from the South to work in the homefront war effort.

The “Caravan of AllStars” played clubs and restaurants, adding to the lively nightlife along Oakland’s Seventh Street.  Some referred to the area as “Harlem West.”  In the sixties, construction of BART and other renewal projects, marked the end of an era.

“But the stories and music remain…as performed and recalled by the Allstars, some of whom lived those days and nights,” said Bill Schechner, producer of the show.

Schechner, tv news personality, will do a few quick interviews: “ …about times gone by and characters who lived through them. You’ll dance (I hope) and have a good time.”
